The organic growth
from the inside out of natural shapes: the various marks these
expanding forces leave on the skin or bark, creating knots, interlockings,
changes of directions (determined by tensions between exterior
and interior forces), mark the struggle for survival and fulfillment
of different organisms.
The same shape (organism) might evolve differently in different
environments. (I've seen trees grown to their full potential.)
We seem to be programmed toward continuous growth into one another's
territory, an incessant struggle which inevitably hurts something
or somebody. We are in the position of finding solutions (adaptations)
to new situations, creative ideas which might enable everyone
to survive and grow somehow, but never to attain their full potential.
But is reaching one's full potential the only valid purpose of
life?... or is finding an alternative also a worthwhile achievement?
Large pieces in wood and large drawings feature interlacing geometries, shapes
which grow more complex from an initial nucleus. The resulting
forms seem purified but still maintain a sense of organic memory.
Sometimes the forms are close to achieving their full potential
like in "Continuous Proliferation"; others seem to be
twisted and contorted by an adverse fate, like in "Inner
Forces."
I use construction wood as my building material because I found
its abstract organic shape perfect for describing systems of growth
in nature. They are like atoms: construction units, with simple
geometric forms.
